The water at Plitsvice was particularly clear and teeming with fish. Posted by Picasa

Plitsvice, Croatia. There is a biological process that goes on here which is unique. It was scientific and badly translated, but I gather what happens is the trees fall into the water and get encrusted by stone (calcium I suppose). Its not quite like fossilisation where the rotting wood is replaced by mineral deposits etc. Just develops a stone casing.(perhaps, I may have it totally wrong). Posted by Picasa

This meal I had in Croatia. The cucumber and the salad came from the garden outside my flat. The beer costs 50p a bottle. Good stuff. Posted by Picasa

Saturday

Went to meet Dave for a picnic in Green park.
Thanks to my sheer genius I brought to the picnic nothing but myself... I'm still a little disorganised.

Waited for Dave in The Wolseley, had a pot of lapsang as I waited.
We then pottered off to Maison Blanc but It was closed so we grabbed a few chocolates from Prestat and then went sat in the park.

Again I see to be "cat-nip-for-tramps" and soon enough one was joining in our conversation. I particularly liked his subtle "is that champagne?" he had some and some hoola-hoops. I forget what he had to say - It wasn't very important.

Went home and an hour or so later people were arriving at Chez Moi for some tedious garden party. It ended a few hours after it got dark...

Friday

Had a massive joint (4 fore ribs worth) of roast beef, scottish. Very nice.

And about 3/4s left for sandwiches!

I spent most of the day cleaning out the garden as saturday we're having a party there.

A night out...

Having had early nights all weekend I chose monday night to go out.

I drank 2 large Gin and Tonics whilst I ate my 3rd salad of the day (dinner) then I popped across the road and sat in the Cafe, spoke to Ah-Me-Dooh (thats clearly a phonetical representation of his name) the man who runs the cafe - he is from Cairo. I had a G&T there aswell then I bimbled along the front past a street performance and headed to Stars N' Bars the American style sports cafe. I had another G&T and spoke to some American girls, an Italian called Anthonio from Modena and a French chap called Gawain.

Gawain works on one of the yachts, we couldn't descide what size it was as "everything is relative" we moved onto Long Island Iced teas. Gawain was getting drunk as he thinks he might be in trouble as he just shouted at the owner of the yacht "ok , give me a break, just give me a fucking break". We eventually dragged him over to the rascasse club where he wasn't let in because he was in shorts... He said he would go to the boat and change but by the way he almost swam to the boat we reckoned he wouldn't be back.

In the Rascasse we had some more drinks, not sure what, and I met the American girls I had met earlier that day on the beach - It was nice they remembered me... eventually I stumbled home. Declining the offer to go play blackjack in the Casino as A) I was a little tipsy B) I have no money and C) I'm not getting in a drunk Italians Alfa Romeo with 6 people equally as drunk as I. Italians are not the most reassuring drivers even when sober.

Winding up...

Yesterday I spent all day in the outside Cafe opposite the apartment. I like it because the staff there know me as I pop up 2-3 times a year for a few weeks for the last however many years.

Last Easter it got "scary" as I stopped having to order and they just always brought me what I wanted... So this time I have been varying my order to keep them guessing. I got there for an early breakfast capuccino and started a new book, Fiction!, called Merde Actually - 6 hours, 1 coffee, 1 sandwich and 2 beers later I had finished it. Its pretty amusing, a nice break from Stalin.

On the way back in to the flat I noticed in the mirrors in the lift that I seemed paler than I had been before... Too many days of eschewing the beach... So today I made damn sure I spent a healthy 4 hours lying on the beach/splashing around.

Croatian Lakes

Below is just a brief glimpse at Lake Plitsvice (i think thats how the english spelling goes... I called it Lake Blitskreig and Spit Vice and lots of other things...)]

This trip ended up streatching the bank a little... Aside from the 4am wake up to make the 6am bus which cost about 15 there was also the entrance fee of about the same and then the way back which is NOT direct but via some other town.. Karl's town is the translation... can't remember what the croatian is... not Karlstadt or Karlsburg or Karlsgrad... something else...

International Firework Competition

At this time of year in Monaco there is an International Firework Competition and entries are spread every few days over a few weeks or so.

Last night was another display, I took about 200 photos and some are below, they are by no-means the "best" but I couldn't face hours wading through them all for focus etc.

I find fireworks pretty challenging to photograph as the contrast is so great and often confuses the camera between a really quick exposure (if it locks onto a flash) and a really long one (if you set the photo up when its dark awaiting the next flash). I found it easier just to turn the camera onto a manual mode and crank up the ISO setting to 1600.

A few examples below, maybe when i get home and can see them on a bigger screen i can pull out some good 'uns

No Money

Ive managed to (and had to) increase my AMEX limit by 400, various other cards are buggered already...

Then i got an email telling me my phone bill... 160GBP... thats probably the largest one ive ever had, brilliant.

So im broke...

Currently reading: The prison letters of Wei Jingsheng (almost finished) and The Stalinist Legacy by Tariq Ali (just started/halfway through). The latter is a Marxist analysis and makes good beach reading, I love reading fantasy books on the beach.

Need a Job.

And then I saw a cloud...

Saw a large cloud today whilst lying on the beach - left in disgust.

Deafness now cured, it was tremporary after all...

Last 2 days i've been having a large lunch sized salad for breakfast, its actually really good...

Been lying on the beach alot, slightly red nose. But I'm now the brownest I've ever been.

Feeling most chillaxed...

Game over

I'm in Monaco to stay until the 2nd August.

Travels are over.

Its a hard life, there is a beach and healthy food and not alot more. I'm fairly brown at the moment - I hope immigration let me in. (Post-racist humour steeped in irony - get off my back).

Remember you can read other occasional pieces I write here.

If everyone is particularly lucky I might publish my travel Diary at some point, only 12.99 + VAT (price subject to changes in line with inflation in Zimbabwe).

Also I have gone partially deaf in my right ear, I hope this is a temporary state of affairs... fairly sure it is water or something... i'm not a doctor.

Xander breaks the Hungarian music photography scene

While I was in Hungary I went to a music festival.

I took some photographs.

And here they are in some Hungarian music article for the magazine "Underground".

Im international I tells ya!

Zagreb Night

Left the Dorm i was staying in because there was a freaky Belgium guy. Wandered around the corner and went into a tiny bar, the tiny ones are the best because there are no tourists. Higher chance of social interraction with the locals... even if they just rob you.

On the TV was a comedy, a man was in hospital being resucitated with one of those electric thingies but the Nurse, dressed only in her underwear, was so hot that he kept having heart attacks so the Doctor had to drag the Nurse into the cupboard... It was highbrow stuff.

Got talking to the locals, One of them fought in the Croatia - Yugoslav war, he got 2 medals. He has a son who is 25. He buys me beers, then we go somewhere else and get more beers then we go somewhere else and get more beers... there is a pattern (and i dont get robbed - i thought that was inevitable but no), then i go to the Dorm and say hello to the Belgium guy, hes freaky. It poured hard with rain.

In an hour my train leaves for Rijeka.

Lake Bled

Following advice I woke early and pootled off to Lake Bled. About an hour and a half by bus.

In the middle of the lake there is an Island with a church on it, I hired a rowing boat and set off. I looked around the church - Its most impressive aspect is its age and location. I then swam around in the lake a little before rowing the boat back to the owner. I was complimented on my rowing technique and the man bitched about tourists who didn't know what they were doing... Its nice to be told you're great. Then I lay in the sun to dry off.

This here picture is a Swan with Cygnets... now that is a silly looking word. Looking towards the Church on the Island.

Beyond Austria

From Vienna i went to Klagenfurt in the south and spent 2 nights with a friend from university, then i got a lift with his father and brother to Ljubljana in Slovenia, where i am now.

It seems nice but i havent as yet had a good chance to look around, tonight and tomorrow i shall try.

No photos as i left my camera in the room and not alot has happened... more social stuff than cultural stuff... I also bought my first piece of artwork from local artist in Klagenfurt, it is currently in the mail to England, so to my family: look out for a larger than A4 brown paper parcel.

I need to get some food and maybe a drink...

Vienna!

And now a little culture to detract from the sleaze below (click on the photo for a close up its breathtaking)... scroll down!

Another photo from the slovakian club mentioned below...

Alas a man´s arm blocked the flash, but those who care to stare... Here the ´lucky´man is nuzzling the hooker´s crotch...

A photo from the displaced jewish cemetary.

Last night in Slovakia

Watched England lose to Portugal met some English girls, watched Brazil match with them, went to a bar and then a club.

Where this picture was taken.... the woman (not a random person, but i suppose hired by the club - which was on a boat) then lapdanced the volunteer from the crowd (think childrens party clown and then cry) who in this picture i think is being whipped a little...

Long stong short she ends up naked and he is standing there with his trousers and pants around his ankles for about 5 minutes - displaying proudly what might have been the world`s smallest nob and a sizeable pot belly while she wobbled herself around... i don´t have photos luckily of the later stagers as one of her minders suggested i might die if i didnt put the camera away.

Travels...

From Debrecin i went to Tchop and from Tchop to Skole, these places are in the Ukraine.

I found the Jewish cemetary in Skole, 30 years ago the communists levelled it and placed on that area a petrol station, In the field next to it and mostly covered by undergrowth are the uprooted and abandoned tomb stones. There is also a recent monument placed by one of the families commemorating the 2500 people shot by fascist in 1941-1944. I photograph all this.

Coincidentally when i left Skole back for Tchop i managed to procure the help of a father and son to get over the language barrier with the retarded ticket lady who said i couldn't use the train because her computer was broken, i explained i didnt want to ride her fucking computer to Tchop and was going to get on the fucking train anyway. I don't wake up at 5am to have some retarded bureacratic bitch tell me to watch a train stop and then leave because she cant print my ticket.... lucky she doesn't understand my string of early morning expletives. But the father and son arrive a little later and are also going that way so i go with them... long story short he is the Cultural minister of Skole and on the long train journey we discuss alot of things in bad english. HE is trying to place a monument near the petrol station to commemorate all the graves not just the one small one done by a family but Lviv the regional capital isnt so interested.

The train rolls slowly towards Tchop - 4 hours, only 2 by car. At Tchop i get a train to Cierna which is in Slovakia, getting a train from Tchop to Bratislava is very expensive from Cierna rather cheaper. From Cierna i get a train to Kosice and from Kosice i get one to Bratislava. At Cierna i make friends with some girls who find it hilarious an English person is in this part of the world, but they do not speak English. In Kosice i make friends with some tramps and a group of students from a bilingual college who are going camping, i have a 2 hour wait here. When i arrive in Bratislava at 22:45 i make friends outside the station with "Mike" or Mischa and i end up staying at his friend's house - Jana and another Mischa. This is lucky as couchsurfing has come to a tragic end...

Yesterdays Lunch

Chicken wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cheese and asparagus. Very nice, but i doubt its traditional hungarian food... If only i could read the menus i wouldnt just point and hope for the best! Cost? 2GBP inc. beer.

Street Theatre

The picture below is from a street performance that i stumbled upon. The plot was quite easy to follow though i think i missed out on a minor sub plot, damn language is crazy.

It gets quite arse-slappingly raunchy. the girl in the photo below gets her arse slapped alot by some old man, but the guy she really likes is the one she appears to be felating below.

Nice.

Silly Bavarian-looking man with impressive pole...

At the weekend I went to... looking at some stupid hungarian name i've written down... some music festival.

It were massiv... ai... entrance was about 8GBP (no pound sign on silly foreign computers) and the beer was about 50p a pint. I also tried some "Magyar Palinkaház" which is their national drink, it comes all all kinds of flavours, i think i had apricot with honey.

It seems to go to Romania i have to go back on myself and that sounds annoying so i might screw romania and go to Ukraine. I know nothing about Ukraine, Kiev is the capital right? Thats about it, didn't it have an Orange revolution? Viktor Ushenko and Victor Yanukovic... or something... popular unrest over lack of improvements from the guy they revolted to get in office... great... maye i go somewhere else. I dunno... i'll probably go Ukraine - i've never been...

First day in Budapest

Ok, its been done... this isnt a qwerty nor is it an azerty keyboard. I thought that was bad enough... this is an qwertz keyboard and i hate keyboard people even more...

Enough on that.

My first day in Budapest is going well. I have gone to St Matthias church and seen the Crown of St Stephen and a few other things, the church itself - previously Ottoman until theyleft and it was churchisised again. see... culture... some people may like to know i am keeping a diary of this trip... not a la Pilkington (oblique reference most of you wont get... but i know some will) Ö <-- wots that? damn keyboard...

Also saw the palace - on the outside, located St Stephen`s basilica and the parliament. I visited the parliament a few hours after i landed at 1am ish... it was nice in the dark and near where i am staying. As i got near a guard woke up from a flowerbed he was sleeping in and pretended to be alert whilst yawning, Bush was in town after all... vigilance a must'.... they have stolen the exclamation mark.... um... searching... ! voila!

Well here is me prattling on like a school girl, not eaten much local cuisine yet, a burger king... though last night i did have some local crepes, well crepes stuffed with things england knows not of.

Ill leave it there now, more later!

The Future

On Thursday I fly to Budapest and I am Couchsurfing for at least the first few nights. I have also packed my trusty hammock, tarpaulin and mozzy net in case I decide to camp or am forced to burglarize a public park to sleep in.

I also plan to visit the Gundel Restaurant, the most expensive in all of Hungary I'm told, as the Menu and ambiance looks eye-watering... So I may have to pack a jacket, shirt and trousers as well... I'm traveling lightly but powerfully, by which I mean the bare essentials to live in a forest, a change of clothes and a couple of credit cards in case I decide to change lifestyle.

If only I had a plan rather than deciding to go for a potter around the area, still - no rush! I can't help remembering the Monty Python Hungarian phrase book sketch... their language is completely unlike anything else i've ever read!

Its been a week but...

NOW MY EXAMS ARE OVER [hazzahs are in order].

However, on the 22nd I am off to Budapest [one way ticket, but I will be back!)

I'm sure I will be writing about Hungary's (et al) cuisine but i'm guessing it will be sporadic. Read all about it here!

Alternatively read all about it on anotherfoodblog.com where my sporadic writing will be spaced out by more regular contributors!

(today I had a ham and cheese bagel and yesterday's Chicken curry again and will probably make myself a ham and cheese toasty).

Tuesday

I'm just going to skip the last few days; sunday and monday. I only ate scraps and was busy avoiding revision.

This morning I woke at 7:15 and had a coffee and a shower followed by a sausage and bacon sandwich.

I then stretched a bit and went to my 9:30 exam. It went "well" as in I covered approximately the right amount of paper with ink. The time seemed to end just as I finished reading both essays through - the content however I shall leave to be judged by the professionals.

After my exam I lay in the sun - pretty much all day. I ate a bowl of instant noodles for lunch and made a large and rather spicy Chicken Madras for dinner.

Exam tomorrow on Explanatory Concepts in Political Science. It is at 2pm so I shall start revising tomorrow morning.

Saturday!

Saturday was nice and sunny, I lay in the sun until I was starving and then I made an omlette with cheese and beans on toast. Thus:

In the evening we had a BBQ, Robin cooked, Ewan provided most of it and I helped eat!

Friday food!

On friday whilst watching Threads - mentioned below. Sam, Dave and I ate this pie which I made:

Crisis of Identity

Yes this is a food blog... just haven't written about food for a week...

Yesterday I made a chicken pie, it was very good. Sam, Dave & I partook of it and might fine it was to. We were watching Threads at the time which is about a Nuke being dropped on Sheffield/England... It wasn't very light hearted.

More food soon! [It is the 'exam' period though and i'm busy looking busy].

Teachers - historic.

Teachers, at schools I have been to, often said in the first few weeks of term: "i don't know what school you used to go to - but we don't tolerate that here" worst still they could say "what school did you go to" - promoting your naively proud resoponse - only to then reply "well we don't tolerate that here". Damning stuff.

Is that the same as saying to a foreign guy you live with: "i don't know where you come from but in england we do our washing up". Just a thought.

(N.B. while i do live with some foreigns chaps they are the good ones and do clean theire mess away)

The End is Nigh!!

For the spice of life and freedom of speech.

http://www.24dash.com/content/news/viewNews.php?navID=7&newsID=5468

Synopsis:
Some guy isn't allowed to preach using a megaphone. Ok, whatever... he's a crank [don't mean to offend anyone but...]

I enjoy walking past these people and tapping my head. Is anyone actually afraid or scared by these people? They amuse me like the rowdy shouts of an Istanbul bizarre. Lets also ban Chinese restaurants, and Greek ones, and... better idea: let's ban restaurants, the stench of cooked and cooking food oozes onto the streets and stinks up the place. Did i mention tramps? ban them aswell, they're visual polution and human detritous.

Lets ban colours, everyone must wear white! Personally I get headaches easily and colours just makes it so much worse. Perhaps English people can wear white and those foreign types can wear black - just so you know when you start a conversation if you're going to encounter a linguistic or cultural barrier. And lets ban people going out after dark. Because i can't see my car from my bedroom window when its dark and someone might rough it up and that thought stops me sleeping.

Also valium/lithium for all so everyone is nice and mellow.

Hooray!

p.s: yes i do realise he hasnt be BANNED and hes just not allowed to use a megaphone. So lets keep restaurants so long as you can't smell them on the other side of the road...

And now for something completely different...

“The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.” - Churchill

Damn weather. Fooled me again!

A few weeks ago it was sunny in Brighton. When I was in London I gathered shorts and summery clothes and took them back with me. Cue 3 weeks of miserable pissy weather.

I now arrive in London and it's sunny here today, all my shorts are in Brighton.

Tuesday, tomorrow - i'm going to go back to Brighton and the forcast is good, so is the Friday after. I will use my shorts! (or eat them).

Sunday

Woke lateish and had a sandwich whilst watching the Monaco Grand Prix. Good stuff.

Left house 3:30 ish to get to Dagenham Heathway, I packed a weeks worth of clothes and took my passport (almost, not really - it is miles away though). Sat on District line for well over an hour, began to hallucinate... I saw this vast area of 'London' which didn't look like London. Crazy stuff.

Went to Dave's house and had a few beers.

Saturday

Woke Oxford.

Jo, How many alarms do you need to go off to wake you up?????

Arrived London middayish

Watched Star Wars II, (Clone wars) Had a Siesta and went to dinner at a family friend's who lives nearby. Tasy BBQ, plentiful wine. Home and now sleep.

Night

Friday

Today I woke up, summer seems to have been a brief 3-4 days over a week ago and the grey drizzle was spattering on the window pane. Had a cup of hot chocolate and headed for a logic lecture.

After that I had a sausage and bacon sandwich. It was very good, but the bread was the cheap stuff that is easily squashed into a thin mush that cleaves to the room of your mouth.
At noon I headed for the pub to meet some other people, most of whom study International Relations, we sat around worrying that we haven’t started revising yet and perhaps we should be.

I headed for London afterwards and read on the train a publication of the Institut Liberales de Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung called The Capitalist Peace. It’s rather good and follows my course on War and Resistance rather well, so it should be rather easy to drop into essays.

I then had an early mixed grill: Lamb chops, tomatos and that sort of thing. Then on to Oxford for a drink with friends!

Oxford was great, saw "Cellar" Dave (I know yr reading this). Had a large Capuccino, time was not on our side and after an hour at 22:00 i had to leave and go to the beautiful Joanna graduatation party from St. Claire's College (IB). That ended remakably quickly at 1:30am and we left for Xi'an's, a chinese restaurant, which was closed. Ended up at the only club we could find open (the Coven?? I forget...) Which was having a Gay Night.... Thanks to Jo and Sky for saving me at certain occasions, and to Rob i can only say i'm so sorry they were busy saving me... my heart goes out to your violated flesh... And thanks to Sky for buying me a Coke, i was stoney broke.

Thursday, a day of toasted cheese...

Today i woke up to a bacon sandwich and a lecture on the EU.

I then got back, around midday and ate 4 slices of 'cheese on toast' whilst watching Dr. Strangelove.

This evening I had another portion of yesterdays spaghetti Bolognese and again i saw the earwig, again on my bed. Again I went to remove it, not wanting to splat it all over my sheets and again the flick of my hand did not direct it onto the 'killing zone' as planned but, rather, into reclusion. The damn thing is taunting me.

Night!

Wednesday

Not alot happened, I Think I ate a ham and cheese toasty around midday and made a large amount of spaghetti bolognese to eat in the evening and for future days.

There is an earwig in my room, apart from a cockroach I can't think of a more repulsive looking creature crawling on you bed... It is still alive... somewhere.
